Description
Tiffany / Shiebler Sterling Elaborate Chatelaine 1880'sI am privileged to list this fabulous item that came directly from a Palm Beach FL estate.
This elaborate chatelaine is in excellent original condition, with crisp details and intricate repousse patterns, all dating from the mid 1800's.
I find the makers marks of both Tiffany and Shiebler on the back of the waist brooch rather interesting along with the mark of
XLIV. XLIV by the way is translated to the numbers 44 so I do not know what the significance is of their sharing this Roman Numeral.
From the top of the brooch to the bottom of the longest appendage, it is 17 1/2" and weighs 316 grams.
There are seven sterling silver links each mounted with intricate appendages, the links being rather elaborate as well.
"PEN"
Tiffany pen opens to reveal the hallmark Tiffany & Co decorated with elaborate repousse.
"PIN CUSHION"
Pin cushion done with scroll work and pineapple in a planter is marked Shiebler inside the loop that attaches it - very difficult to photograph because it is inside the loop.
"NOTE BOOK"
Note holder card has floral etching with a script monogram perhaps reading RH or KH - I am not certain. The pages are marked with the days of the week and all are intact. On one there appears the words "Well Granny I love my" and I cannot make out the rest. I believe the pages are bone. The sterling hallmark is inside the loop and reads "SterlinG C & D" but I cannot locate the maker.
"PILL BOX"
The pill box is marked "Tiffany & Co Sterling" and also "8398 m 8853" and is 1 1/2" in diameter and decorated on both sides with a center flower along with flowers on the edges.
"WHISTLE"
The whistle is marked "Tiffany & Co Sterling C" with open work on the top and a crest on all four sides. The total length is 2 1/2".
"STAMP BOX"
The floral stamp box is marked "Tiffany & Co 8263 m 99 Sterling" and is 1 1/8" on the longest side. The interior is vermeil or gold wash aka gilt. It is richly decorated with a floral pattern.
"SCISSORS"
Lastly, the knife has three items inside - a small knife, a larger knife and a pair of scissors. It is marked Schneider Geneve in a couple of places and I am certain the cover is sterling but I cannot locate a hallmark.
I consider the condition very fine - no dents or dings or scratches that I can determine.
